No Snapchat export yet? How to get one, and a sample to try
The tool needs the Memories ZIP from Snapchat. You request it once:
- Sign in at accounts.snapchat.com and open My Data.
- Under Select data to include, turn on Export your Memories (add the JSON files if Snapchat offers them), pick the date range, confirm your email, then submit.
- Snapchat emails you when the ZIP is ready. Download every ZIP part.
- Come back here and drop them. Nothing leaves your browser.
Snapchat says it aims to deliver within 7 days; big accounts can take longer.
Import the restored folder
- Finish My Data on a computer and restore the ZIP parts in the box above. The request itself is How to download Snapchat Memories.
- Unzip the restored archive and keep the Snapchat-Memories year and month folders.
- On a computer, open photos.google.com and sign in to the Google Account that should own the library.
- At the top right, select Create and add photos. Under Add photos, select Import photos, choose the restored pictures and videos, and select Open.
- To keep backing up that folder later, choose Back up folders instead, select the restored folder, and allow access. Google says this needs Chrome or Edge, and the Photos tab has to stay open.
You can also drag the restored files onto the Google Photos page. Drag them onto the library, not onto a pile of overlay PNGs. A transparent overlay imported alone is not the Snap you remember.
What not to send
Import one old picture from that folder and read its year before you upload the rest. What the restored ZIP contains names the files the restore writes.
- The original mydata ZIP. Photos will not read the date list inside it.
- index.html from the export. That page is Snapchat’s viewer, not a picture.
- Loose -overlay PNGs. Captions belong baked onto the photo before upload.
- A second copy of files you already saved to the camera roll on the day you tapped Save.
If every year collapses into this week
Google Photos is sorting on the date inside the file you uploaded. Folder names do not win. The page for that result is Snapchat Memories in Google Photos with the wrong date. Remove the bad copies there, then upload only the restored folder.
A file shelf, rather than a photo library, is a different upload: How to back up Snapchat Memories to Google Drive. Putting the same pictures in both places stores them twice on the Google Account.
Common questions
Can Snapchat export Memories straight to Google Photos?
No. The bulk copy Snapchat gives you is a ZIP from My Data. You upload that library to Google Photos yourself after the files are on a computer.
Should I upload the ZIP or the photos?
Upload the restored Snapchat-Memories folder: the JPEGs and MP4s. Leave the original ZIP, the HTML viewer, and the loose overlay PNGs out of Google Photos.
Will the year I took the Snap show in Google Photos?
Only after the capture date has been written into the file. If every picture lands on the day you exported, you uploaded the unrestored files. Fix those files and upload again.
Do I have to leave a browser tab open?
Import photos is a one-time upload. Back up folders, in Google’s article, keeps watching that folder only while the Photos tab stays open in Chrome or Edge.
