How the in-browser Memories fixer works
FixMyExport and SnapEasy sell a .exe/.app that does this on disk. We run the same job in the tab that already has the ZIP. Scan is free so you see counts before you pay.
The pipeline
- You drop one or more mydata ZIPs (and memories_history.json if it is loose).
- The scanner walks memories/, -main/-overlay pairs, nested overlay ZIPs, and numbered split clips.
- Rows in memories_history.json supply Date, Media Type, and Location. Filenames are the fallback.
- Restore writes DateTimeOriginal, GPS EXIF, QuickTime creation times, optional overlay composite, optional concat.
- You download a year/month folder plus restore-report.csv. Import that — not the raw My Data ZIP.
Cloudflare never receives the photos. The only network calls after page load are quota/checkout. ffmpeg.wasm, if you unlock videos, loads from a public CDN into this origin’s memory.
What desktop apps add that we skip on purpose
If you have a 70 GB library and a weak laptop tab, a desktop app can win on RAM. For the common 1–8 GB My Data ZIP, a browser is enough and you do not install anything.
- Uploading your archive to their cloud so they can charge a second SKU.
- Logging into Snapchat or fetching expiring download links for you.
- My Eyes Only decrypt — nobody honest can do that from My Data.
